Suicide Car Bomber Kills 23 in Baghdad

A suicide car bomber has killed 23 people and wounded more than 40 others at a police checkpoint in a Shi'ite neighborhood in northern Baghdad.

The attack was carried out Tuesday in the Kadhimiya district. No one has claimed responsibility.

Also Tuesday, reports say Iraqi government airstrikes killed 19 people over the last two days in the Sunni militant-controlled city of Fallujah.

The reports say women and children are among the victims.

Sunni militants have declared an Islamic state in parts of northern Iraq and Syria and threaten to overrun Baghdad as they try to topple the Shi'ite-led government.

Fighting between Sunni militants and the Iraqi army has killed thousands of civilians.
