Multiple explosions near an oil depot in the Nigerian city of Maiduguri have killed at least 15 civilians and six suicide bombers.

Nigerian officials said soldiers blew up three vehicles laden with explosives while a fourth car exploded, apparently set off by a suicide bomber.

A surviving attacker was arrested after a standoff.

A witness tells VOA's Hausa service that the three blasts rocked a nearby checkpoint around 2 p.m. local time Tuesday.

The police commissioner of Nigeria's Borno state said the attack appeared to be the work of Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

The group is blamed for thousands of deaths since 2009. Amnesty International said Monday that 1,500 people have died in Boko Haram-related violence this year alone.
