An eccentric millionaire from one of America's richest families has agreed to travel to Los Angeles to stand trial in the death of one-time confidant Susan Berman, who was killed in 2000.
The extradition hearing for Robert Durst came just hours after the last episode of a documentary based on his life ran on American national television. In the final scenes of The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, he is heard in a bathroom mumbling to himself, "What the hell did I do? Killed them all of course."
The film detailed Durst's life of privilege and links to three deaths: his friend Berman; his wife Kathleen Durst; and Morris Black, an elderly neighbor in Texas.
Durst was apparently unaware his wireless microphone was still on, even though the camera was not, when he used the bathroom.
His extradition to California may be delayed by new charges in Louisiana. A police report said the 71-year-old heir to a New York real estate fortune was carrying a revolver when FBI agents arrested him without incident at a New Orleans hotel before the final episode. It was not immediately clear if Durst had the required gun permit.
Durst has been at odds with his own family for years. Durst's brother Douglas, president of the family's multi-billion-dollar real estate conglomerate Durst Organization, said he hoped his brother "will finally be held accountable for all he has done."
The Durst family members together are worth an estimated $4 billion.
