The U.S.-led coalition says it has launched another 27 airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria and Iraq.

The U.S. military said Monday that the air attacks hit Islamic State fighting positions and buildings near Kobani, the Syrian town near the Turkish border where Kurdish fighters and insurgents have been battling for control for months. In addition, an oil refinery near Dawr az Zawr was hit.

In Iraq, the coalition said 16 air attacks hit more Islamic State fighting positions, an artillery system, a rocket launcher and buildings. The attacks occurred near Baiji, Taji, Al Qaim, Ramadi, Tal Afar, Al Asad, Sinjar and Mosul.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported a suicide car bomb killed 12 Shi'ite militiamen and Iraqi soldiers in Abasiyat, 130 kilometers north of Baghdad. Authorities said the blast sparked a battle between Iraqi security forces and Islamic State fighters.
